DALLAS (AP) — Houston point guard Jamal Shead exited the Cougars' Sweet 16 game against Duke with 6 1/2 minutes left in the first half after his right foot turned awkwardly on a move to the basket Friday night. The All-American walked slowly off the floor and went to the locker room. Shead was driving when he planted his foot and it turned, though he continued the play and missed a contested layup. After being tended to by an athletic trainer, Shead walked gingerly past the Houston bench and into the tunnel toward the locker room. The Blue Devils trailed top-seeded Houston 16-10 when Shead departed with 6:38 left.

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston reliever Bryan Abreu has appealed the two-game suspension he was given by Major League Baseball for what the league said was intentionally throwing at Adolis Garcia of the Texas Rangers during Game 5 of the AL Championship Series. Because of the appeal, Abreu will be eligible to pitch in Game 6 on Sunday night, when the Astros can advance to the World Series for a third straight season with a win. MLB said Saturday that all six umpires decided Abreu’s pitch was intentional. Abreu, who was also fined for the incident, is one of Houston's top relievers and has a 1.42 ERA in seven appearances this postseason. Now the Rangers get another chance at the Astros when they meet for the first time in the playoffs in a Texas-sized showdown with a trip to the World Series on the line starting Sunday night in Houston. The Astros completed the regular season matchup against the Rangers with a three-game sweep at the beginning of September. But despite the lopsided results this season, both teams say they’ll start with a clean slate for the American League Championship Series. As manager of the San Francisco Giants in 2002, he lost the World Series to the Anaheim Angels. “In California we were in the World Series, two teams, us and the Angels, battling for bragging rights in California,” he said.

NEW YORK (AP) — Houston Rockets guard Kevin Porter Jr.'s alleged attack on his girlfriend at a New York City hotel left the woman with a fractured neck vertebrae and a cut above her right eye, prosecutors revealed at his arraignment Tuesday. Porter, 23, is charged with felony assault and strangulation in connection with the incident Monday at the Millennium Hilton near the United Nations in Manhattan. Hospital testing showed that the woman, 26, sustained a fractured vertebrae in her neck, the criminal complaint said. In April 2021, the NBA fined Porter $50,000 for violating the league’s COVID-19 health and safety rules by visiting a Miami strip club. In January 2022, the Rockets suspended Porter for a game after then-coach Stephen Silas said the player had a “spirited debate” and “lost his temper” at halftime.

A new study found offices were over half full for the week of January 19-25. The 50.4% average occupancy rate recorded by Kastle is the highest since before the pandemic. Three years after the pandemic drove workers across America to home offices and Zoom meetings, employees are increasingly returning to in-person work settings. Unsurprisingly, the data found offices have varying rates of occupancy throughout the week, as many workers still come into offices less than five days a week. Friday was the least common day for working in offices, with an average of just 34.9%, per Kastle's findings.
HOUSTON — Houston officials lifted an order Tuesday that had called for more than 2 million people in the nation’s fourth-largest city to boil their tap water before drinking or using it. The boil order had been in effect since Sunday, when a power outage at a purification plant caused pressure to drop. The order led to the closure of businesses and schools, including the Houston Independent School District, which canceled classes Monday and Tuesday. The city said water quality samples sent to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality confirmed the tap water meets regulatory standards and is safe to drink. The power system at the water plant undergoes regular maintenance, Turner said, but he did not give a timeline for how often.
